Cassette Contributions

This is not a complete list — more releases can be found on Discogs.

Below is a selection of other official releases by This Window, covering the project’s audio‑cassette output during the 1980s and 1990s, along with later digital‑era releases from the 2000s onward. Official UK releases can be found here.

Context: Cassette Culture, DIY Networks & International Exchange

Much of This Window’s early catalogue emerged from the cassette‑culture movement, a global, decentralised network of independent musicians, sound artists, small labels and home‑recordists who circulated their work through the post. Long before digital distribution, these tapes travelled across continents via mail‑order lists, fanzines, classified ads, and personal correspondence. The movement championed DIY ethics, low‑cost production, and creative autonomy — values that shaped the sound, artwork and distribution of many early This Window releases.

Cassette culture was not just a format; it was a community practice. Artists duplicated tapes on domestic machines, designed their own covers, and exchanged recordings as part of an informal but highly active underground economy. Compilation tapes — often curated by small labels in Europe, the USA and Japan — became hubs of discovery, connecting artists who might never have met in person. This Window appeared on many such compilations, helping the project reach listeners far beyond the UK.

Mail Art & Cross‑Disciplinary Exchange

Running parallel to cassette culture was the mail‑art movement, a worldwide network of artists who exchanged handmade artworks, collages, sound pieces, and printed ephemera through postal routes. Many cassette labels were run by mail‑artists, and many mail‑artists were also musicians. This overlap created a fertile environment for hybrid works — sound experiments packaged with visual art, limited‑edition inserts, or conceptual postal pieces.

This Window participated in this cross‑pollination, sending tapes, artwork, and collaborative materials to artists and labels across Europe and North America. These exchanges helped shape the project’s aesthetic: tactile, experimental, and rooted in the idea that art should circulate freely outside traditional commercial channels.

Why These Contributions Matter

The releases listed below document This Window’s presence within this international network. They show how the project’s tracks travelled through influential labels such as IRRE Tapes, Insane Music, EE Tapes, Corrosive Tapes, and others — each a key node in the cassette‑culture landscape. These compilations often introduced This Window to new audiences, placing the project alongside other experimental, industrial, post‑punk, and avant‑garde artists of the era.
