The Dark Ages - Testing the Rig

Image
There has always been a darker side to This Window ’s music, perhaps influenced by its association with the Goth scene and being in a support band for Bauhaus . “ The Dark Ages ” began as a simple track used to test the studio’s synth setup. It features a couple of modular Eurorack banks, including Moog and Doepfer modules, alongside a Panasonic SX‑KC600 keyboard/synth that had been brought out of retirement. This inexpensive keyboard has surprisingly rich organ and string sounds, which blend with the modular mayhem to create a dark, atmospheric 1980s analogue synth sound. Watch the video to see some of the kit used to make the track The track is a nostalgic look back to the old days—some of them good, and quite a few of them best forgotten.

An English Eccentric – 1980/81 - Download

An English Eccentric – 1980/81: Contextualising Early Cassette Works by Peter Bright Download An English Eccentric – 1980/81 comprises a series of cassette recordings presented in their original, unedited form. These recordings were not conceived as works for public dissemination; rather, they functioned as working notes, provisional sketches and exploratory fragments. Their preservation of tape hiss, mechanical instability and environmental noise situates them within the material conditions of early domestic recording practices, offering insight into the creative processes that preceded later formal outputs. Between 1980 and 1981, Peter Bright was simultaneously involved in several experimental music projects, including T.34 , In A Glass Darkly , and Finish The Story . The recordings gathered here were produced in the interstices of these activities — often late at night or in the liminal hours surrounding rehearsals and performances. As such, they occupy a space betwe...

Fractured Messages and the Art of Interference

Image
Broken signals in horror and paranormal TV turns static into meaning—messages arrive warped and never whole, inviting viewers to finish the sentence. Never finish the story – what is the narrative? Every genre has its shortcuts to emotion. Horror films lean on shadows. Paranormal TV leans on suggestion. But one device cuts across all of them: the broken signal. A message that arrives damaged, incomplete, or warped — something that feels like communication but refuses to settle into certainty. On shows like Help! My House Is Haunted , the technology is half the theatre. Scanners sweep radio frequencies, software isolates static, and investigators listen for anything that might resemble intention. A clipped syllable becomes a warning. A hiss becomes a sigh. A burst of interference becomes a voice from the dead. The audience is invited to finish the sentence, to supply the missing pieces, to believe that meaning can be extracted from noise. The message is never whol...

Performance in Venice

Image
This Window occasionally releases pieces exclusively on YouTube , and this is one of those small, self‑contained vignettes: a field‑recorded fragment shaped into music. The city’s natural acoustics, the soft resonance of the lagoon, and the unpredictable rhythm of daily life form the backbone of the track. It’s less a composition and more a document — a brief, unrepeatable intersection between place, sound and time. A Rare Performance in Venice A moment captured in Venice, where the city itself becomes the instrument. The bells you hear are not effects or samples – they are the living soundscape of Venice in full voice. Piazza San Marco (St Mark’s Square) is the heart of the city, known locally simply as the Piazza . It has long been the centre of Venice’s social, religious and political life, and its daily soundtrack is a shifting cacophony of bells, footsteps, voices, and water echoing through stone. A Facebook Video Interview

Image
Three Questions and Answers I have been asked many times over the years about the methodology and history of This Window . The project has moved through cassette culture, DIY experimentation, analogue tape, digital rendering, and all the strange transitions in between. To make things easier, here is a short Facebook interview that answers three of the most common questions people have asked. The questions are delivered by an AI voice, which feels appropriate for a project that has spent decades wrestling with machines, tape, noise, and shifting technology.

Track inspired by Wistman's Wood

Image
This Killing Thing (Live) and the ecological context of Wistman’s Wood The lyrics for this track were inspired by a visit to Wistman’s Wood in the late 1970s. Even back then, its environmental and cultural importance was well recognised, as it’s one of the most significant remaining fragments of Britain’s Atlantic temperate rainforest . Although small in extent, the wood represents a rare continuity of pre‑Neolithic forest ecology and provides a useful framework for understanding the track’s atmosphere, instability, and sense of impending destruction. This track is in many ways about man's impact on the environment - 'This killing thing inside this machine' -   we are, in fact, the killing thing. Where pitted stone becomes knotted oak... This Killing Thing (Live) captures This Window at their most unfiltered: a moment where chaos isn’t just present, it’s the entire accidental aesthetic. The mix is still being wrangled, the sound engineer is fighting a losing battle...

3mm Philips-Type Eurorack Screws

Image
Morgue Studio: Modular Upgrade & A Small 1990s Discovery Following the recent upgrade of Morgue Studio’s modular synth racks — with new modules from Moog, Doepfer, Behringer and Rakit — an unexpected find surfaced during the tidy-up. A box of 3 mm Philips-type screws, untouched since the late 1990s, was discovered at the back of a storage drawer. These screws are the classic Eurorack size, ideal for mounting modules or replacing worn fasteners. There is a surplus, so if you need a few for your own rack builds or repairs, you are welcome to grab some while they are available. This Window free download series This small piece of studio history sits alongside the ongoing This Window free download series on Bandcamp, which opens up the archive and shares material recorded across several decades. The latest release, Hopeless 1989 – 2026 , is a free five-track digital compilation that serves as an introduction to the world of This Window, trac...
