The Blue Lilo - 8mm Film

HomeMovies – a starting point for an improvisation.

The video below comes from an 8mm home movie shot on the Isle of Wight in the early 1970s. Super 8mm cameras, introduced by Kodak in 1965, were designed for everyday use: lightweight, cartridge‑loaded, and simple enough for families to document holidays, gatherings, and the small moments that would otherwise disappear. Because the film stock was only 8mm wide, the resulting images were soft, grainy and unstable — a fragile analogue record of memory itself. This imperfect, flickering quality aligns beautifully with This Window’s long‑standing process of using degraded media as a creative catalyst.

The piece accompanying the footage, The Blue Lilo, was recorded live at Morgue Studios (Devon) on 16/10/2025. It is an improvised experimental work built around the Cre8 Audio East Beast and Moog Mavis, both of which trigger and interact with a wider modular synth setup. The performance drifts between structure and accident, echoing the unpredictable nature of the Super 8 source material.

Featuring Star and Peter on synths, with Marni on drums, the session becomes a dialogue between analogue memory and electronic improvisation — a meeting point where old home movies spark new sonic ideas.
